British Council Report on Postgraduate Student Mobility Trends to 2024

British Council Report on Postgraduate Student Mobility Trends to 2024

New report forecasts postgraduate mobility trends through 2024

Declining youth population aside, China is still projected to become the world’s largest source of international postgraduate students by 2024. It is expected to send 338,000 students abroad for graduate studies in 2024, compared to India’s 209,000.

In the UK, China is projected to represent the main source of international growth for postgraduate programmes (44% in 2024). Meanwhile, India is expected to be the main source for the US (54%). The report cautions that such high single-country contributions to international enrolments make the UK and the US increasingly dependent on Chinese and Indian […]

In 2013, 51 investment events took place in China online education industry, 44 of which were venture investments. And the figure rose to 54 during Jan.-Aug, 2014, 10 of which (including acquisitions) occurred in Aug. 2014 alone, equaling total investment of over RMB 1 billion.

Faking the grade for overseas study (Article in China Daily.com.cn)

On July 1, cable TV channel CNN reported admission officers saying that as many as one in 10 applications to US colleges by Chinese students may include fraudulent materials like fake essays and high-school transcripts.

The report also blamed recruitment agencies. The Ministry of Education has certified nearly 500 recruitment agencies, but thousands more are said to operate outside official scrutiny. All of this is occurring as the number of Chinese applicants rises and US colleges admit more of them. Almost one in four foreign students on US campuses is Chinese and most pay full tuition.

Figures from the Institute of […]

10 Years of Educational Technology Trends in Online Learning Infographic

10 Years of Educational Technology Trends in Online Learning Infographic

In 2012, trending technologies included mobile apps, tablet computing, game based learning and gamification, gesture based computing, learning analytics, the internet of things, BYOD, adaptive learning, and digital preservation of research. While all of these relate in some way to online learning, most notable is the use of learning analytics. It is during this time that MOOCs began to gain ascendency, and the idea of being able to use such a large pool of data to analyze learning outcomes became very tempting. At the same time, algorithms were beginning to be created in order to do things such as […]

The English empire – A growing number of firms worldwide are adopting English as their official language

The English empire – A growing number of firms worldwide are adopting English as their official language

Tsedal Neeley of Harvard Business School says that “Englishnisation”, a word she borrows […….] can stir up a hornet’s nest of emotions. Slow learners lose their self-confidence, worry about their job security, clam up in meetings or join a guerrilla resistance that conspires in its native language. Cliques of the fluent and the non-fluent can develop. [……..] In all, a policy designed to bring employees together can all too easily have the opposite effect.

Ms Neeley argues that companies must think carefully about implementing a policy that touches on so many emotions. Senior managers should explain to employees why switching […]

Value as a Key Differentiator and the Rise of Digitization in Consumer Strategies in China

Value as a Key Differentiator and the Rise of Digitization in Consumer Strategies in China

FOR THE SECOND consecutive year, a leading trend is the growing perception among Chinese consumers of value as a crucial differentiator. As the 2012 edition of this report discussed, a growing number of consumers now have a greater range of purchasing options, and they are responding by seeking out higher-quality goods. Rather than simply opting for the lowest-priced items, value-minded consumers are increasingly basing their choices on reliability, consistency and product integrity, with price a secondary consideration.

The view of value as a differentiator is not […]
